Nurses, or doctor's assistants, can be very helpful for everyday health care advice. They have had to go to nursing school which is very demanding. They are then given a professional nursing degree which allows them to work in clinics and hospitals. Nurses will provide different services depending on the area they are more interested in. They can choose to work with infants or children, or with the elderly in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Those that are in retirement and at well enough to live on their own for the most part may hire a private nurse to come to their home and perform tasks or check their health from time to time. If they are sick, their private nurse can recommend them to a facility where they can be watched more closely. RNs will supply patients with information they may have when unable to speak with their doctor. Nursing centers in hospitals are there for family members to find information on their loved one and ask any questions they may have about the care their relative or friend is receiving. Medical practitioners are often only in hospitals for a couple of hours a day, which leaves the nurses to speak with family members of those that are sick and in their care. Medical practitioners in general health clinics will hire nurses for their practice to assist them in checking the patient's weight, height, and giving any shots that are required. You can ask friends and family about the nurses they talked to when they had to visit the hospital and if they would recommend that facility for you or your loved one. Retired patients in nursing homes or assisted living facilities should ask about the credentials of the nurses on staff to get an idea on their experience and dedication. Doctor assistants will be well educated and can answer many questions you may have. Your physician may be able to recommend an RN that visits patients in their home to treat them for minor ailments.
